The International Baccalaureate (IB) has welcomed a new partnership with the United World College of Southeast Asia (UWCSEA) to expand its project-based curriculum to students in the region through a new pilot course offering starting in August.
To develop future-ready skills in learners facing a combination of technological, social, political, and climate change, the programme seeks to innovate with a new pilot course for the IB’s Diploma Programme (DP) students. The course, “IB Systems Transformation: Leadership for Change,” was designed by UWCSEA in partnership with the IB to challenge students with project-based experiences. It will enhance student learning with greater student agency and real-world learning.
A group of students will begin their journey with the IB and UWC SEA in August 2024. UWCSEA is the second UWC college to join this pilot programme after UWC Atlantic, which began its programme in August 2023. The pilot course is part of a multi-year review of the DP that aims for global distribution by 2030.
“This course excels at focusing on real-world issues, guiding students to plan and undertake projects focused on issues of their choice. From proposing a project to executing it, they learn how to evaluate their own impact on the community and work toward concrete goals. They are assessed in a way that prioritises competencies relating to students’ development as changemakers,” said Olli-Pekka Heinonen, IB Director General.
