Olli-Pekka Heinonen, Director General of the International Baccalaureate (IB), recently visited Argentina and Uruguay alongside members of the Iberoamerican development and marketing teams to engage in dialogue with students, educators, policymakers, and local leaders on the future of education in the regions.

In Argentina, IB representatives met with government and local leaders committed to driving innovation in the public education system. In Buenos Aires, Heinonen delivered a keynote address titled "Shaping Future Skills: Empowering Students in the Age of AI Innovation" to school leaders at St. George's College, an IB World School.
In Uruguay, Heinonen held meetings with the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP) to explore pathways to implement an IB education in public schools, following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2023. He also participated in a Festival of Hope session with students from Uruguayan IB schools, answering questions about the future of education, the impact of technology, and their aspirations for the world.
The visit concluded with IB Day Río de la Plata at St Brendan’s School in Montevideo, bringing together more than 100 educators from IB and non-IB schools. The event showcased how IB programmes, particularly the Career-related Programme (CP), can complement local curricula and open new opportunities for learners across the region.
The IB has been operating in Argentina since 1973 and in Uruguay since 1971, empowering students to take charge of their learning journeys while developing the skills and confidence needed to thrive throughout life and contribute to a better world. An IB education also empowers teachers as architects of learning excellence, who collaborate with engaged colleagues in a rewarding career supported by a strong global network.
