IB World School featured on HBO show “Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas”
The story of Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, USA, came into the spotlight earlier this month on HBO show “Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas”. The second season of the show, hosted by actor and writer Wyatt Cenac, has been focusing on education and topics such as school safety.
Rainier Beach High School was featured in the show’s fifth episode as a prime example of inequality and its impact on schools. Rainier Beach had been facing declining enrolment and low graduation rates, with potential closure as a threat.
However, the Rainier Beach community joined forces, with parents raising millions of dollars’ worth of funds and grants to introduce the Diploma Programme (DP).
The community’s hard work paid off, with enrollment more than doubling from 350 students in 2007 to 750 ten years later. In March 2013, Rainier Beach became an IB World School offering the DP, and last year the school’s on-time graduation rate reached 88.6%—one of the highest rates in the district.
