Following the announcement of its partnership with the Greek Ministry of Education earlier this year, the International Baccalaureate (IB) has taken a significant step forward in expanding access to the Diploma Programme (DP) within Greece’s public education system.

As part of the agreement, 15 public schools are now set to implement the DP, with 13 having already submitted their candidacy applications. These schools have now entered the candidacy phase, marking an important milestone in the country’s efforts to broaden educational opportunities for students.

To support this transition, the IB hosted a series of professional development workshops at OTEAcademy in Athens on May 9–10, 2025. The event brought together 78 participants, including 13 heads of schools, 13 DP coordinators, and representatives from the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports. These sessions are designed to equip school leaders and educators with the tools and understanding they need to effectively lead and implement the IB programmes

The Institute of Educational Policy (IEP), represented by Chair Professor Spyros Doukakis and Dr. Maria Nika, Project Manager for Actions for IB in Public Lyceums, reaffirmed the government’s strong support for the programme implementation. Their active participation throughout the two-day workshops underscored their commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the DP in Greece.

Ahead of the workshops, on May 8, Dina Khalaf, Senior Development and Recognition Manager and Aaron Boles, Authorization Manager at the IB, visited the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports. During the meeting with His Excellency Ioannis Katsaros, Secretary General, and other key officials, they celebrated the progress made and reaffirmed the shared vision of delivering high-quality and future readiness education to Greek students.

Through this collaboration, the IB will also provide ongoing support, including professional development programmes for educators, training for school leaders, and access to a global network of IB experts and resources, ensuring the highest pedagogical standards are maintained across all participating schools.
