Dr Coenraad Vrolijk

Appointed on 13 April 2015, Dr Coenraad Vrolijk brings extensive experience to the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Board of Governors. He has been a member of the IB’s Finance Committee since 2009.

A doctor of economics, he is currently Regional CEO Africa of Allianz, one of the world’s leading insurance firms. Since 2003, he has been a partner at global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

During 2013 and 2014, Dr Vrolijk was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rosewood Insurance Group, where he was also a member of the board. Under his leadership, Rosewood developed partnerships in countries like Ghana, Kenya, Pakistan, Rwanda, and Nigeria. 

Prior to Rosewood, he was Managing Director at the world’s largest asset management firm BlackRock, where he worked from 2011-2012 leading and building the Financial Markets Advisory team for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Dr Vrolijk joined BlackRock after more than a decade at McKinsey, where he had worked on client projects of global standing. His work covered several countries across Europe, as well as Brazil, the Caribbean, India and the United States.

Before McKinsey, he spent time as a research economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he was the author of a report on the impact of derivatives on policy. He was also a lecturer in economics at Brown University.

Dr Vrolijk studied at Brown, completing a PhD and a master’s in economics. He also holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Bath, the UK, in economics with computing and statistics. He is a graduate of the IB’s Diploma Programme (DP).

Currently living in Geneva, Coenraad is married with two daughters and a son: all three are IB graduates.
