The future of education requires a focus on key competencies that students will need to flourish, developing their uniquely human qualities that are unlikely to be replaced by technology. Critical thinking is vital for both personal and civic life, as it empowers people to assess information and make well-informed decisions. It is fundamental to the process of inquiry, supporting the examination of claims and the assessment of evidence. This literature review defines critical thinking and describes the existing science regarding its instruction, development and assessment.
