To help educators deliver International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes and to support their professional growth, the IB offers a variety of professional learning opportunities. In 2023, alongside its in-person and online workshops, the IB began piloting the use of micro-credentials. These are self-directed and evidence-based forms of competency recognition designed to validate educators’ professional learning. This study provides an overview of the current literature on micro-credentials, emphasizing access to education and training, recruitment, and upskilling or reskilling. The findings indicate a trend towards more flexible curricula. Micro-credentials allow education and training providers to better meet industry needs and offer upskilling or reskilling opportunities. Importantly, rather than replacing traditional degree programs or qualifications, micro-credentials provide greater diversity in education and training, complementing existing degrees and qualifications.
