Digital examinations for the DP and CP

Last updated:

The IB is making a multi-year shift from paper to digital examinations for students in the Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP).

In May 2026, a small group of schools from around the world will be the first to administer digital examinations. This marks a major step in the IB’s mission to lead innovation in global education and prepare students for success in an increasingly digital world.

A gradual, supported transition

The IB will roll out digital examinations by subject group until 2029, using a dual-running approach — offering both paper and digital formats in selected subjects so that schools can choose what works best for them as they begin transitioning.

By the early 2030s, all subjects will be available only in digital format, giving schools several years to make the shift with confidence.

What’s happening and when

  • May 2025: Sample digital examination papers shared with all IB World Schools

  • January 2026: Digital Examination System becomes available

  • May 2026: First digital examinations administered by a small group of selected schools

Subjects in Language and Literature and Language Acquisition will be offered first. Further subjects will follow after continued development and school feedback.

Looking ahead

“We’re supporting schools by running paper and digital exams in parallel — helping everyone build confidence in the logistics and teaching approaches. Ensuring fairness and comparability is our top priority.” — Matthew Glanville, Director of Assessment, IB
“We believe this change will give our students the capabilities and confidence to make a real difference in an increasingly digital world.” — Olli-Pekka Heinonen, Director General, IB
