Sneak peek
What does it really mean to teach academically diverse learners in an inclusive school effectively?
If we are going to educate young people for an inclusive future, we need to ensure they have inclusive learning experiences within inclusive schools. As educators, this means knowing exactly what “inclusive” looks like at the classroom, school and system level.
In the classroom, inclusive practice for academically diverse learners is often oversimplified as “just good teaching” or overcomplicated as “unrealistic”. Effective inclusive practice is somewhere in between—it is challenging but also attainable by the average teacher. At the school level, inclusive practice is sometimes considered entirely in the classroom, or entirely within a separate program or place. Again, effective inclusive practice lies somewhere in between these extremes.
In this presentation, Jane will share how her understanding of inclusive practice in classrooms and schools has developed over time through experience and research. She will also highlight the “must have” elements of inclusive practice. Jane will challenge participants to consider opportunities to build inclusive capacity at their own sites.
