Case study of International School of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The International School of Ulaanbaatar is the only internationally accredited (CIS/NEASC) IB World School in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. With a small international student body of 217 representing 23 countries and 18 mother-tongue languages, we serve both the national and international communities.

Ulaanbaatar, one of the world’s coldest, sunniest and most isolated capital cities, has a growing population of 800,000 from a national population of 2,500,000. The challenge of being a small school in a very remote area, with limited international travel services, has not deterred our school’s growth and development.

ISU has established its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Representatives from the 36-strong faculty attend conferences and events run by the IB and others. Our sporting teams annually travel to China to compete with other, usually larger, international schools. Our teachers are encouraged to be pro-active in setting up networks in Beijing/Seoul, as well as the wider IB world and to use the online curriculum centre (OCC) to support classroom teaching. We encourage our staff to take part in IB and EARCOS conferences, to be trained as IB workshop leaders and to take advantage of all training opportunities. All of these activities help reduce the isolation that can sometimes be felt by schools in remote parts of the world.

We use ICT to link our students to a broader range of primary resources, thus enhancing the child-centred, inquiry-based programme that fosters reflection and action in our students. Next year, in the new campus, we will have a state-of-the-art technology room with new infrastructure and computers. We aim to maximize the benefits of technology and use it to limit the effects of our isolated location.

In addition, our library of 9,000 volumes will be enhanced even further with spacious areas for students to study, the provision of separate archiving and storage, and the installation of the latest library software.
