Enhancing MYP implementation

No matter what stage of the journey your school is at with the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), the IB can help your school reflect on how to further implement the programme and develop your current school practices.

While many schools are currently not operating under ordinary circumstances right now, we hope that these MYP implementation strategies will prove useful when you and your students are back in the physical classroom.

For questions on how to adapt these strategies to your online curriculum, please email us.

Implementation strategies

As the IB strives to constantly improve and innovate its curriculum, we commissioned the Claremont Evaluation Centre (CEC) to investigate how our MYP schools across the world experience the implementation of the MYP curriculum.

Based on this multi-year research, the IB has identified three themes that categorize nine high-quality implementation strategies for the MYP:

  • Collaborative strategies
  • Key strategies
  • Optional strategies

Download the reports to learn about what is expected from MYP schools, explore your typical day-to-day school practice and that of fellow MYP schools around the world and reflect on which strategies your school can use to successfully implement the MYP, or enhance your current school practices and reach the desired programme outcomes.

Collaborative strategies Key strategies Optional strategies
Approaches to learning Concept-driven teaching Building quality curriculum
Interdisciplinary learning Global contexts eAssessment
Service as action Subject-group flexibility
Vertical articulation

Listen to a podcast in which the CEC research team discusses the study’s rationale, how it was conducted, and what surprised them about the findings.

You can also listen to two MYP educators discussing how the CEC study findings were met by the pedagogical leadership and what actions their school is planning to take to address the CEC findings.

Sharing experiences

Once your school has learned, discussed and reflected on implementation of the MYP using the reports and best practice examples, it is time to engage with the MYP global community to share what has been successful in your context. Sharing experiences is the best way for all of us to enhance the MYP. Together we can show how the MYP is transformative for students, easier for teachers and flexible for schools.

Please use the MYP communities on the programme resource centre to talk and exchange ideas with other schools or share general stories about your experiences with the MYP with the wider IB community via social media using #implementMYP:
