Research across the IB

In recognition of the important role research plays in our understanding of the nature and practice of international education, the International Baccalaureate Research Team was established in May 2000. The research team aims to:

  • Develop research capacity relevant to practitioners in the wider IB community, in order to ensure research is targeted and relevant
  • undertake a critical review of research into international education and international-mindedness, in order to explore expressive order values (addressing conduct, character and manner), in the three IB programmes
  • establish a network of partner institutions, in order to expand knowledge and practice in research activities relevant to the IB
  • complete a pilot study of transition between the three IB programmes, in order to explore the curricular and institutional parameters associated with transition
  • evaluate key quality measures regarding curricular and professional development activities, in collaboration with IB World Schools, IB regional offices, the curriculum and assessment centre and academic directorate/the research unit
  • undertake a critical review of transdisciplinarity in each IB programme with respect to impact on student learning and pedagogy
  • complete a review of existing evaluation procedures for pilot courses and other innovative curriculum developments
  • communicate summative and formative outputs of IB related research findings to IB practitioners and to the wider academic and professional communities through a variety of printed and online media, including refereed academic journals, professional journals, conferences and workshops.
