At MLC we are starting the Extended Essay library support program with our next group of sixty Year 11 Diploma students. We are looking forward to working with these students until the submission of their essays in June 2008. The school year in Australia is only halfway through and at MLC we start with introducing students to the essay in Term 3 of the year prior to the essay submission date. Teacher librarians from MLC Libraries support students with a program that assists them with research, questioning techniques, bibliographies and avoiding plagiarism.

China – Helena Trevor
Beijing Librarians’ Network

The mission is to function as a networking group providing professional support to members and sharing local knowledge and resources.

We were officially launched on International School Libraries Day in October 2006. Our convenor is Angela Cleeton – Middle School Teacher Librarian at WAB (Western Academy of Beijing) and ex Hong Kong.

Our membership has now grown with staff from schools ranging from Hong Kong to Dhaka. Membership is open to all persons who work in school libraries at English speaking schools, local and international in any role. So our membership has also included non IB schools. We allow time for IB librarians to discuss issues such as library support for the Extended Essay.

One of our aims is to establish a Charter for the operation and purposes of this network. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Association of Australasian IB Schools : AAIBS

The Association of Australasian IB Schools was established in the early 1990’s specifically to assist schools in Australasia, providing a network of professional support, information and service.  It is now a stand alone legal entity registered in NSW.  Its goals are:

  • To support the goals and objectives of the International Baccalaureate Office and the International Baccalaureate schools in Australasia.
  • To provide support for the International Baccalaureate programme and for International Baccalaureate schools in Australasia.
  • To facilitate communication among International Baccalaureate schools in Australasia.
  • To liaise on behalf of AAIBS member schools with the Ministries of Education and with professional educational organizations in Australasia
  • To act upon request or when deemed necessary so as to promote the recognition of the International Baccalaureate Diploma as a qualification for entry to universities in Australasia.
  • To support the professional development programmes of the International Baccalaureate in particular those sponsored by the International Baccalaureate originating in member schools.
  • To promote research into the benefits of the International Baccalaureate programme and examinations.

Member benefits

Member schools receive a dedicated web presence on www.aaibs.org. They also use certificates produced by the Association for presentation to students and DVD’s promoting the various IB programmes in an Australasian context.  Member schools also received discounts to the Annual Conference where educational leaders meet each year to hear presentations and discuss IB developments in the Australasian context.

2007 AAIBS Conference, Canberra

Each year a member school hosts a conference on behalf of the association. Over two-hundred and twenty Principals, Co-ordinators and teachers from across the Region attended this years conference, hosted by Narrabundah College, Canberra, from 7 - 9 July 2007 at Rydges Lakeside Hotel.

The conference theme was ‘Foundations and Futures’, focussing on where the IBO educational programmes have come from and where they are heading in the Australasian context.

Narrabundah College was the first IB school in Australasia and one of its first graduates spoke as part of the Conference proceedings, reflecting on her IB experience, twenty five years ago and her desire to educate her own children with the characteristics of the IB mission.

Those who attended the conference enjoyed presentations from IB Deputy Director General, Ian Hill, Regional Director Judith Guy, PYP Regional Manager Mignon Weckert, Australasian Representative Greg Valentine, and other keynote speakers on latest developments in Australasian education.

This Annual conference is the only opportunity to meet key IBO staff in Australasia each year and allows Australasian schools to debate local issues.  More information can be found at www.aaibs.org.

2008 AAIBS Conference, Sydney

Next Year’s Conference will be held in Sydney, hosted by Monte Sant Angelo College from 12-14 April 2008 with a conference theme of knowing the heart, knowing the mind, focussing on the relationship between indigenous and new cultures.

AGM and AAIBS Representatives

The annual AGM was held in conjunction with the Annual Conference.  It saw Helen Banks leave the committee after her two-year term concluded. Marilyn Copland has joined the committee in Helen’s place and represents New Zealand Schools.  Please contact any of the committee members if you have any issue that you would like to see the Standing Committee pursue.
