Focus on The International School of Penang (Uplands), Malaysia
The International School of Penang (Uplands) was founded in 1955 on the top of Penang Hill as a British preparatory boarding school for the children of planters in Malaya (now Malaysia). It is now relocated into a purpose-built facilities campus in the heart of Batu Ferringhi, the island’s famed tourist area. The new campus includes 36 classrooms, five laboratories, gymnasium-auditorium, a playing field and a 25-metre swimming pool. Art, Music, Drama, Design Technology have dedicated rooms and workshops. Boarding accommodation is in eight adjacent, semi-detached houses that are inter-linked.
The International School of Penang (Uplands) is a not-for-profit educational trust and boarding institution offering quality international education to expatriate and Malaysian children aged between 5-19 years. Administered by an elected Board of Governors, it is the only school in Malaysia jointly accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, from the USA, as well as being a member of British International Schools World-Wide (through FOBISSEA) and the Boarding Schools’ Association. The School received an award from the Malaysian Ministry of Education in June 2003, recognizing it as a top international school. It has been an IB World School for five years. The IBO authorized the school to offer its Primary Years Programme (PYP) in June 2006.
The curriculum at The International School of Penang (Uplands) is designed to offer an international education. Qualities and characteristics are drawn from various national curricula, supported and promoted through the experience and motivation of highly-qualified staff. The School exists in order to develop the confidence and self-esteem of students by encouraging them to achieve in an extensive range of arenas. Throughout their time at Uplands, students are offered an opportunity to learn a lot; much of it is academic, but lessons for life are there as well.
