MYP moderators

The role of the moderator

Moderators are teachers in MYP schools, ideally with experience of teaching the final year of the programme. Interested teachers are asked to speak to their MYP coordinator, who can submit an online recommendation on their behalf. Teachers invited to become moderators have to attend face-to-face training at two-and-a-half day standardization meetings in one of the IB regions: IB Africa/Europe/Middle East, IB Americas or IB Asia-Pacific. The meetings are led by experienced senior moderators whose support is available throughout the process. All expenses associated with the meeting are covered by the IB and moderators also receive a daily fee. Meetings take place in April and May each year. Moderation of samples and writing of reports for the eight schools normally allocated to each moderator must be completed within a period of eight weeks after the meeting. A fee is paid for each sample moderated.

The role of moderator affords an opportunity to gain professional development in the assessment of MYP student work and to exchange ideas with teachers from other schools. The cooperation of heads of schools is much appreciated in releasing teachers from school in order to attend the standardization meetings, however the experience gained by teachers during the moderation process can be of great benefit to teaching and learning in the school.
