Description of Workshop Levels

IB North America offers a four-tiered workshop architecture that is designed to articulate the audiences, training goals, and the objectives of each workshop and seminar. Although the following workshop descriptions apply to all three IB programmes (IB Diploma Programme, IB Middle Years Programme, and IB Primary Years Programme), goals and objectives differ according to programme and workshop levels. Please see page 7 of the Workshops Schedule and Registration Materials booklet for a complete description of the training goals and objectives.

PLEASE NOTE FOR PYP ONLY: Prerequisite for Level 3 workshops is attendance at a Level 1 or 2 session.

Orientation Seminars are one-day sessions that are designed for school officials and leaders who are investigating the feasibility of bringing the IB to their schools. Orientation Seminars are not required training and do not cover the application process. IB North America Workshop Providers and subregional associations offer Orientation Seminars. Additional Orientation Seminars may be scheduled at any time throughout the year. For a schedule of Orientation Seminars currently on offer, please see the Workshops and Conferences section.

Level 1: Application & Authorization Workshop is a three-day workshop that provides training and assistance for schools that have decided to apply for IB authorization. For the Diploma Programme, Level 1 training assists participants in completing Appendix 3 (programme course outlines) of the school application process. For the Middle Years Programme, Level 1 covers Part B of the application process. For the Primary Years Programme, Level 1 training includes an optional session covering Part B of the application process. Level 1 workshops are open only to teachers currently teaching in IB schools or in applicant schools. Please note that Level 1 is the only required training for the Application and Authorization process.

Level 2: Experienced IB Teachers Workshop is a three-day workshop for teachers who have completed Level 1 training and/or who teach in schools that have begun to implement an IB programme. For schools offering the Diploma Programme, the Level 2 workshop is for authorized schools and does not cover the Application and Authorization process. For Middle Years Programme and Primary Years Programme schools, the Level 2 workshop is for authorized schools as well as for candidate schools that have submitted Part B of the application. Level 2 workshops are open only to teachers currently teaching in IB schools or in applicant schools.

Level 3: Topical Seminar is a three-day seminar covering a topic or several topics of interest. The relevancy of teaching experience and/or knowledge of the IB will vary from seminar to seminar and programme to programme depending on the topic on offer. Seminar descriptions indicate the audience(s) for whom the topic is appropriate. Descriptions, as well as required reading materials (when applicable), will be posted on this web page. Please read seminar descriptions thoroughly before registering.

A note to teachers and coordinators who:

  • have extensive IB teaching experience but find themselves teaching in applicant schools or
  • do not have IB teaching experience but find themselves teaching in schools with long-established IB programmes.

Under these circumstances, teachers need to consider the goals and objectives of Level 1 and Level 2 workshops to decide what workshop will best fulfill their training needs.

Travel Advisory!

The Departments of State and Homeland Security now require citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere.

IB North America is now accepting proposals for Level 3 topical seminars for all three programmes.
