History examiners

The history syllabus is divided into two routes: Route 1 relates to history of Europe and the Islamic World. Route 2 relates to 20th century world history.


Route 1—History of Europe and the Islamic world


The assessment of route 1—History of Europe and the Islamic world is split into three papers:

  • Paper 1 is common to both standard level (SL) and higher level (HL) candidates and is focussed on one of the prescribed titles below:

    1. The origins and rise of Islam c500–661
    2. The kingdom of Sicily 1130–1302

  • Paper 2 is common to both SL and HL.
  • Paper 3 is an extension paper for HL candidates only.

 


Route 2—20th century world history


The assessment of route 2—20th century world history is split into three papers:

  • Paper 1 is common to both standard level (SL) and higher level (HL) candidates and is focussed on one of the prescribed titles below:

           1. Peacemaking, peacekeeping—international relations 1918–1936
           2. The Arab-Israeli conflict 1945–1979
           3. Communism in crisis 1976–1989

  • Paper 2 is common to both SL and HL.
  • Paper 3 is a regional paper composed of four regional options for HL candidates only. These include: Africa / Americas / Asia and Oceania / Europe and the Middle East. If you wish to mark paper 3, please indicate the region for which you wish to be considered.
