Assessment in IB English

This seminar, intended for both English SL and English HL teachers, hopes to make clear the rationale of IB assessment, and to help teachers feel more comfortable with their own practice. Participants will discuss the philosophy of IB assessment, will grade several examples of each component, and discuss the outcomes from these sessions. Links will also be drawn to classroom practice. Participants will take a detailed look at rubrics, and how to use them. Rubric building software will be utilized to help participants develop their own rubrics, as well as develop their understanding of the purpose and implementation of a rubrics-based curriculum.

Geography Seminar: Fresh Water as a Scarce Resource: Issues and Conflicts

This seminar is designed for experienced IB geography, Environmental Systems, and History of the Americas (given the critical role of water in the settlement and development of the American Southwest) teachers who seek reflect in greater depth on issues and conflicts involving water as a scarce resource. It will emphasize depth of understanding and reflection on the importance of water as a scarce resource and is fully consistent with three concepts of internationalism that IB applies to curriculum development: (a) the role of culture in our lives and the lives of others, (b) the interdependence of natural and human systems on our planet, and (c) environmental awareness and sustainability. Morning activities will take place on campus: afternoon sessions will be devoted to off-campus field visits and contacts. And opportunities will be provided for the use of GIS and GPS applications, reflecting their growing use in IB Geography. Participants are encouraged to bring: a GPS instrument, a camera, and a clipboard for the off-campus field visits.
