Combined Level 1 & 2: This workshop will address the needs of both new and experienced teachers.
Level 3: Topical Seminar is a three-day seminar covering a topic or several topics of interest. The relevancy of teaching experience and/or knowledge of the IB will vary from seminar to seminar and programme to programme, depending on the topic on offer.
IB & College Selection and Application Process: A Road Toward Individuation
The college selection journey is an individual process and can be a road toward self-discovery. The major focus of the workshop will be on how the IB Diploma Programme – with its rigor, alignment, and engagement – prepares students for a successful college experience including the application process, selection and higher-education achievement. The linkages between CAS, EE, TOK, international-mindedness and HL vs. SL study will be covered in depth. Creation of a college admissions strategy will be discussed as will the roles of college contacts, teacher recommendations, standardized test scores, parent involvement and early-decision. Heads of Schools, IB Coordinators and Counselors will benefit from this workshop.
French Literature: Teaching for Understanding
This course, designed for teachers of French B, French A2, and French A1, will examine how teachers can introduce the Harvard University research model Teaching for Understanding while enabling participants to engage in discussions on making thinking visible using creative work and non-traditional ongoing assessment. Discussion will center on how teachers incorporate international mindedness and theory of knowledge into their teaching of French B and A2. Participants will share best practices, and discuss differential teaching and learning. Using a variety of cooperative learning strategies, participants will concentrate on how to make creative work and somewhat less traditional performances of understanding and ongoing assessment interesting and stimulating to both teacher and students. Participants will be required to read prior to the workshop a paper introducing Teaching for Understanding model and three French classic books that examine as a main theme Critique des vices et de l’hypocrisie dans la société : Molière’s Dom Juan, Voltaire’s Candide, and Camus’ Étranger.
