Recognition of IB diploma for admission to universities and colleges

Switzerland

The cantonal universities and federal institutes of technology provide most higher education in Switzerland. French is the language of instruction in the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchâtel; German in the Universities of Basel, Bern, Luzern, Zurich and Hochschule St. Gallen. The University of Fribourg is bilingual, French/German.

La Conférence des Recteurs des universités Suisses (CRUS) has announced the following conditions for students holding an IB Diploma.

The universities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Luzern Neuchâtel and St. Gallen all accept IB Diploma holders provided that students have a minimum of 32 points out of 42 (points for Theory of Knowledge and Extended essay are not considered). In addition students must have the specified subject combinations as shown in the table below. New for 2008/2009 is that either mathematics or a natural sciences subject must be at HL.

General subject areas

Group 1 : Mother tongue
Group 2 : Second language
Group 3: Mathematics
Group 4: Natural sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
Group 5: Social sciences: Geography, History or Economics
Group 6: Elective (one subject from Groups 2, 4 or 5 above)*

For the Diploma student this will have the following implications

  • Group 3 - Individuals and Societies. Only History, Economics and Geography are accepted
  • Group 4 - Experimental sciences. Only Biology, Chemistry and Physics are accepted
  • Group 6 - Only subjects from groups 2, 4 or 5 defined in the table above are accepted.*

*Please note that some universities do not apply this strictly but will accept subjects in group 6 which are not mentioned in the table.

Students should contact the faculty in question for information. Applications should be made direct to the university of the candidate's choice.
