Recognition of IB diploma for admission to universities and colleges

Sweden

The IB Diploma is recognised by Swedish Universities and Colleges as meeting all general requirements for entry provided the student 1) has acquired at least a grade 4 in Swedish B (Standard Level), 2) English is one of the subjects. Please note that for some study programmes Swedish A1 or A2 is a special subject requirement. If Swedish is not part of the Diploma, students must pass a Swedish test at an Adult Educational Centre (Komvux) or a "TISUS" (Test in Swedish for University Studies) at a university. A similar test in English is required if English is not included. Only the full diploma meets the general admission requirements.

For most study programmes and single subject courses there are also special subject requirements* expressed in a system of standardised eligibilities: For Medicine, Mathematics (Math Methods), Physics, Chemistry and Biology at SL must be included. Engineering programmes require Mathematical Methods, Physics and Chemistry at SL. As a general guidance, overall point scores are more relevant than grades in individual Higher or Standard level subjects. All programmes have a limited number of study places. Applicants are selected on the basis of their secondary school leaving certificate (total score of the IB Diploma or the results in the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test). The competition is usually very keen for Medicine, Veterinary Science, Computer Science and Architecture. At present, applications to Swedish universities concerning comprehensive study programmes are handled centrally by the National Admissions Office to Higher Education (VHS). Applications to shorter courses are handled by the universities only.

Overseas students should submit applications to the Swedish Consulate in their country and at the same time apply for a residence permit; their applications will then be forwarded for assessment to the university where the student wants to study. Swedish and resident immigrant students should apply directly to the VHS. IB students must submit their results to the VHS by the beginning of July for final placement. In order to meet this deadline, the school must make a request for results service provided by the IB.
