DP authorization process

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) takes an active role in guiding candidate schools towards the goal of delivering the Diploma Programme (DP) to students.

Every candidate school interested in offering the DP must successfully complete the IB’s authorization process.

Are there specific processes for the DP?

To provide the DP, schools must demonstrate that the infrastructure and skills are in place to deliver the programme to the IB’s high standards.

Schools must also:

  • appoint a DP coordinator, to lead the programme and communicate with the IB
  • commit to the mandatory professional development of DP teachers
  • ensure that the student experience is continuous. If a school chooses to offer other IB programmes then students must move from one programme to the next, without any gap.

The authorization timeline

Schools are authorized through four main stages, beginning with the completion of an application form at the consideration stage, and ending with final authorization from the IB.

Between those two points there are many other milestones, including verification visits and professional development workshops for educators.

* Alternative authorization timelines may be accommodated by special request to the appropriate regional office. Schools wishing to pursue an accelerated or extended authorization timeline must meet global IB criteria and be willing to accept the associated risks and additional costs and requirements. The final decision on any such request rests solely with the IB.
